How to Select PU Foam for Sofa Seating
A sofa cushion cannot be selected correctly from density alone. Comfort and service life depend on the foam grade, firmness, thickness, seat base, cover tension and how frequently the furniture will be used.
Separate the seat, back and arm requirements
The seat carries the greatest load and normally needs a supportive foam selected for repeated compression. Back cushions usually prioritise a softer feel and body conformity, while arms and shaped profiles may need foam that is easy to fabricate.
Using one foam throughout a sofa can compromise either support or comfort. Identify every component and its finished thickness before choosing the grades.
Understand density and firmness
Density describes the amount of material within a cubic metre of foam. Firmness describes the force needed to compress it. A higher-density foam is not automatically harder, and two foams with similar initial feel may have different structures and intended uses.
For daily-use seating, discuss user load, cushion dimensions and expected frequency of use. Do not choose only from a verbal description such as soft or hard; compare physical samples in the intended thickness.
Design the complete cushion
Foam performs as part of a system. A rigid plywood base, webbing or springs will each change the feel. Deep cushions, tight upholstery covers, crown shape and multiple foam layers also influence compression and recovery.
Manufacturers often combine a supportive core with a softer comfort layer. The layers should be evaluated together in a prototype rather than judged separately by hand.

Send useful details when requesting a quote
Provide finished cushion length, width and thickness, number of pieces, furniture type and preferred feel. If you already use a foam successfully, mention its brand, grade and density or send a sample for comparison.
For repeated production, calculate sheet yield and cutting waste before ordering. A trial cushion remains the best way to approve comfort, fit and upholstery appearance before the full batch is cut.
